Abstract:
Data-centric services, such as transaction processing and search engines which sustain the needs of millions of users each day, rely heavily on the I/O subsystem for their storage and processing requirements. Technological improvements in hard disk drive densities and data rates have continued to fuel the successful deployment of these services.However, server storage systems consume a large amount of power, leading to higher operating costs, increased stresses on the power supply, detrimental environmental impacts and even restricts the ability to design higher performance disks. Power management is a challenging problem for these enterprise storage systems since we do not want to compromise on performance.
In this talk, I will present dynamic speed modulation of disk drives as an option for power savings to mitigate performance loss. I will also discuss techniques for dynamic thermal management to allow continued future innovations in disk drive performance. I will put this work in perspective to the broader set of topics that we are pursuing in utility computing with large computing resources.
