Title: A Proposal for Population Dynamics Simulation Research for AIDS Impact Mitigation

Presenter: Bonnie Browne and Dr. Shirley Moore, Clemson University and University of Tennessee

Date and Time: Monday, March 23rd, 2009 3:30-4:30pm

Abstract:

First we will describe Ms. Browne's experiences during the summer of 2008 when she spent a month volunteering in an AIDS outreach program in Tanzania and how those experiences motivate the need for research on effective interventions to help the children of AIDS. Following that introduction, we will present statistical and qualitative information concerning the current and projected AIDS orphan population in Africa. Next we will discuss the economic, educational, health, and emotional impacts of AIDS on African children. We will briefly survey previous and current related work in population dynamics, including for example studies on HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, perceptions, and risks in Africa by the Center for Population Dynamics at Arizona State University. Next we will outline the proposed population dynamics research, including intervention goals, how factors affecting those goals can be measured and modeled, and how possible interventions can be evaluated to predict their effectiveness in achieving the goals in a sustainable manner. Finally, we will describe how we envision this research providing tools to assist government and non-governmental organizations with the planning, coordination, and evaluation of interventions for mitigating the impact of AIDS on children and families.
