Title:
Coping with the dynamic global burden of disease: analysis of trends and needs from humans to malaria parasites
Presenter:
Sandeep P. Kishore, MD-PhD Program., Weill Cornell / Rockefeller / Sloan-Kettering Institute
Date and Time: Friday, July 31st, 2009 10:00am-11:00am
Abstract:
What is the global burden of disease right now? Who is suffering from what and how will it change by 2030? Will Bill Gates' public claim to eradicate malaria in our lifetime be realized? And what about emerging infections like swine flu or recent pandemics like obesity or heart disease? How will they change the landscape of global public health and, critically, will medical scientists team up with bio-informaticians to assuage the burden of disease.
This lecture from an MD-PhD student pursuing global health activism and malaria work will provide context and texture to the challenges and opportunities in tackling the burden of disease, will provide update on malaria control with a focus on East Africa and highlight a recent development that just might illuminate how malaria parasite co-evolved with humans.
